A bit about Barry's Wine Tours
Your host Barry Soljan has been involved in the Auckland Wine Industry for most of his life and has now continued this passion by creating Barry's Wine Tours.
Barry's lineage in wine goes back to the start of New Zealand's winemaking history. His grandfather Bartul Soljan developed one of the first wineries in Auckland in the renowned West Auckland wine region on Lincoln Road, Henderson in 1932.
Barry's uncle Frank also established a vineyard further up the road in 1937. His sons Tony and Rex took over the family business from their father and created Soljans Wines. The original vineyard and winery moved to the stunning Soljans Estate Winery in Kumeu in 2002 and they have been crafting award winning wines and continue to welcome people to share in the fruits of this family run business. 'Soljans' has become one of the most popular places in Auckland to experience a stunning glass of wine, enjoy sumptuous food and soak up the ambience in the beautiful vineyard surroundings.
Barry's introduction to grapevines and wineries came at a very early age while working in his fathers Plant Nursery learning about the propagation and grafting of grapevines. When Barry was starting out in his own business he built his own nursery and began a life long focus on the wine industry. Each year demand increased for Barry's grafted vine varieties reaching production of about 140,000 vines per year. Over his career, he has supplied all of the major vineyards in Auckland and was instrumental in supplying the vines for Stonyridge Winery and Goldwater Estate on Waiheke Island.
Amongst Barry's accolades include his appointment as Nurseryman and Principal Propagator for the New Zealand Wine Institute. Barry's deep roots in the wine industry, knowledge of the vines and his passion for the grape will be one of your many highlights of this Auckland wine tour.
